It is reported in today's BeloJo that Detective DiCarlo is finally indicted by a grand jury on charges of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Misdemeanor Assault. This comes after a security camera "witnessed" the attack in a dark parking lot on October 20, 2009.
It took four months, a mild media frenzy, and a spirited community forum to augment the investigations of Providence Internal Affairs.
"Unfortunately, for several weeks the officers who investigated this case and the lawyers who prosecuted it have had to listen to those who glibly and publicly predicted it would all be covered up. That did not happen, and as we now move to the trial process, I commend those who have worked so tirelessly to see that justice will be done." says Attorney General (and Gubernatorial Candidate) Patrick Lynch.
Several weeks? Several weeks would have been understandable. Along the course of four months, people start asking questions. For Lynch to characterize the public's concern as "glib" is insulting. Still, people will wonder: what if it were not caught on videotape? If Lynch were seeking to absolve himself from criticism on this case, he is better served to blame the particular reasons why he could not simply charge the accused with a crime.
[Note: My iphone version (but not my computer version) of this story includes a quote from Mayor (Congressional Candidate) Cicilline, who chose to demonize the crime rather than the public's outrage. He also mentions disciplinary action against the superior officer. This punishment is far more important from a systemic standpoint, so kudos to the folks responsible for that decision.]
Nothing (yet) indicates any action being taken against the uniformed bystanders to the Assault.
